The ultimate race for fresh powder tracks: Time is (not) on our side

December 14, 2012 By Stano Faban 1 Comment

What if there is a place on Earth where the powder paradise lays exactly in the middle between two very powder-hungry communities? And what if one of those is cheating?

Whether we admit it or not, lots of times there is a race for fresh tracks between different groups when touring.  There is usually a race even within those groups!
Each location, each bowl, each secret stash witnesses such battles many times a season. This is a fact.
The game must be fair for all. Even Best Buy’s black Friday sale junkies have the same chance.
The powder paradise is the Canadian Rogers Pass and the two gangs fighting for it daily are from towns of Golden and Revelstoke.
Golden and Revelstoke are about 45min drive from the Pass each, however, Golden runs on Mountain Time and Revy on Pacific. Whoever put the time zone boundary between these two must have never shred any pow. Otherwise, he would have realized it can cause accidents on the Trans Canada Highway and bruised egos in the backcountry. Must have been a committee of amusement park designers.
On the other hand, maybe that’s why Golden was named golden, cause it has a first-tracks advantage.

Petition

If you care, you are welcome to sign a petition to switch Revelstoke to Mountain Time, or better to switch Golden to Pacific since it lays in BC anyways (border with Alberta is a bit east of Golden).

Arc'Teryx reinvents avalanche airbags with its Adrenaline Dragonfly Jacket

May 30, 2012 By Stano Faban 2 Comments

In the past couple of months, there are rumors flying around that this Canadian company known for its great outdoor clothing and gear is working on a new avalanche airbag device. And in true Arc’Teryx fashion they are doing it in style.
One revolutionary invention Arc’Teryx went on to patent is to inflate the air bags with surrounding air with help from an electric motor rather than to inflate the air bags with compressed gases from a small cartridge, like all current avalanche airbag manufacturers do.
But that is not the biggest surprise yet!
Arc’Teryx is thinking way outside the box on this one. Instead of following suit and supplying the market with another heavy avalanche airbag backpack they are reinventing the game with their new Adrenaline Dragonfly Jacket.
Arcteryx airbag Adrenaline Dragonfly Jacket.
With this avalanche airbag jacket you don’t heave to carry a pack to be protected. This is especially convenient for in-bounds skiers. But even for backcountry touring because when you sit down for lunch you are likely to take off your pack but not your jacket.
The airbags are positioned on the back sides of the jacket, like dragonfly’s wings, in a way that your backpack does not interfere with the system.
Arc’Teryx usually thinks through every detail of their gear to make it maximally functional. And as you can see they made sure that even colour plays its role – highly visible hues make for faster rescue.
The price is not known yet but we will likely be over $1000 dollars, in line with the rest of Arc’Teryx products.
Stay tuned for more and in the meantime check out the new Scarpa Alien Revelstoke boots.

New prototype boot in Scarpa Alien series

April 19, 2012 By Stano Faban 1 Comment

It doesn’t happen often that a big company like Scarpa lets slip out a product photo while it is only in a prototype stage.
The first Scarpa Alien boot was spotted some years back at skimo world cup competitions, only few approved racers were testing it. Then its carbon cuff version came into being and in 2011 both boots were officially released.

The Alien series is known for its comfort, lightness and innovative features. However, it looks like Scarpa is pushing the envelop of design even further.
Now, the new Scarpa Alien Revelstoke is even lighter (with a carbon sole), more comfortable and should be super fast in transitions as there won’t be any buckles getting in the way!
The name have been chosen after a Canadian powder town whose residents’ winter footwear inspired the Scarpa engineers.
