Athletes Named to Team USA and Canada for the 2015 World Ski Mountaineering Championships in Verbier on Feb 6-12

February 2, 2015 By Stano Faban Leave a Comment

With the 2015 World Ski Mountaineering Championships just around the corner, Team USA and Team Canada skimo athletes lists have been finalized based on the results from qualifying races and/or who decided to make the financial commitment to pay all the costs and go represent their countries.

Team USA

After heavy battles at qualifying races in Colorado and Wyoming in December and January the following skimo athletes have been selected to compete in the various races. The below list/graphic have been taken from the USSMA website with permission.

Team Canada

Qualifying for the 2015 Worlds was mostly a formality north of the border, however, the athletes that are going improved greatly since last year. With Reiner Thoni, Andrew McNab and Stano Faban taking a break from serious racing in order to focus on other projects/work the Canadian skimo men’s team will be the smallest since about 2006. On the other hand, the women’s worlds team is nicely filled with four senior racers and one espoir.
Men:
Nick Elson (senior) – should be racing all events except perhaps sprint
Travis Brown (senior) – likely all events
Peter Knight (senior) – likely all events
Oliver Bibby (espoir, only 20-years old) – most of the events
Nick and Travis will likely pair up for the teams race while Peter and Oliver will likely race together.
Women:
Melanie Bernier (senior) – the athlete to watch for as podium is within a reach, will likely race all events
Kylee Toth (senior) – most of the events
Michelle Roberts (senior) – most of the events
Marth Burley (senior) – most of the events
Katarina Kuba (espoir, only 20-years old) – most of the events
Pairs for teams races will be determined in the next couple of days.
