Hello Sarah,

What kind of design of the watch are you looking for - hard core mountaineering looking, more official or somewhere in between?

Personally, I think the Suunto X-Lander provides all that is needed including the vertical speed functionality and on top of that has a neutral design which makes it wearable even on a wedding day :)

Sarah,
I use the Suunto t6c. It seems so be a very good watch so far but is very "training specific" if that is what you're partner is looking for. It can be linked wirelessly to a number of "PODs" that measure all kinds of stuff like heart rate, speed, distance, total ascent/descent, the effectiveness of a training session, etc. All of this info can be saved in the watch and analyzed via a number of software programs (one of which comes with the watch). I've owned two Suunto watches now and both have been very good products. My former watch still functions great (x6hr) but has fewer functions than the t6c. It cannot be linked to any type of PODs so will only measure altitude, heart rate, and ascent/descent (no speed, distance, training effect, cadence for bike, etc). I think Suunto makes a great altimeter/training watch. Garmin also has some product as does Polar.
